Glasses in the air; Bottoms Up. Obie Trice, Detroit’s native son, is releasing a new album with reason to celebrate. The long awaited LP will be released on his own imprint, Black Market Entertainment. “It’s a win-win for me,” he beams proudly. And true to form Mr. Trice, the album is full of what his fans love most, great hip hop music.
Bottoms Up, set for April 3rd release, features production from classic Obie Trice collaborators, Dr. Dre and Eminem. “It’s still Shady for life,” he ensures. His buzzworthy new single “Spend the Day” features vocals from Drey Skonie formerly of Kwiet Storm. He also features a verse from the late, great MC Breed on the album, of which he speaks with humility and appreciation. Of the overall opus, he reveals, “It’s got the club vibe. The street wise vibe.” Heavy on substance and not at all formulaic, tracks like “Spill My Drink” “reflects some of the things I had to go through,” according to him. “I wanna see young cats come up without having to resort to some of the things I had to.” In fact, aside from music {and most importantly, through his music} Obie Trice has been a strong presence in the Detroit political scene in terms of helping with legislation that will support artisans in different creative fields. Of Detroit’s youth, he sincerely pledges, “They need to be guided a little bit. I wanna be a part of that.”
From music to movements, the future is as bright as Obie’s past. Fans of the unsung emcee can look forward to reconnecting with their favorite rapper’s rapper, as his new fans can start from Bottoms Up and go backwards through a quite infectious catalogue of music. A survivor by nature and bred by experience, Obie Trice is still grateful to the people who have supported him since the beginning. That support has been the driving force for him. And nothing is more forceful than a determined man with a vision and support. So, watch out.
